Approved Clinician & Section 12(2) Induction & Refresher Training for Wales

This training is eligible for 1 CPD point per hour subject to peer group approval (Psychiatrists only).
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is pleased to offer an initial training course for prospective Approved Clinicians and Section 12(2) doctors within Wales. Completion of the Induction course will be accepted by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board as evidence of initial training for the purposes of approval as a Section 12(2) Doctor or an Approved Clinician in accordance with the Mental Health Act 1983 Approved Clinician (Wales) Directions 2018.
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board also offer the one day refresher training for Approved Clinicians and Section 12(2) doctors who are due to apply for re-approval.
These courses will provide delegates with an understanding of the powers, functions and duties of Section 12(2) Doctors, Approved Clinicians and others under the Mental Health Act 1983. The training will be set within the context of the wider legal, policy and guidance framework, which govern and affect situations requiring the presence or intervention of an Approved Clinician.
Course information and booking
Please note that delegates attending training are required to complete the two days of the induction course or the one day of the refresher course IN FULL. The training concludes at 5pm each day.
Attendance at the training alone does not signify approval, all attendees must submit an application for approval/re-approval with supporting documents to the approvals team.
Approved Clinicians and Section 12(2) doctors should attend refresher training during the final two years of their current approval period.
When booking refresher training, please indicate the date of expiry of your current approval.

Course fees and course times
The course fee is £375 for the full two days Induction tuition via webinar or £210 for the one day refresher course via webinar and includes an email of the speaker’s presentations.
Course times are 09.15am start until 5pm finish.
Cancellation policy
- Cancellations received up to 28 days before course date - full refund
- Cancellations received between 28 and 14 days before course date - a refund minus £125 admin fee
- Cancellations received less than 14 days before course date - no refund
- If delegates do not attend training without prior notice - no refund.
Trainers and training policy
The courses are organised by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and will be delivered by Neil Allen and Associates via Zoom webinar. The sessions are interactive so delegates must ensure access to both microphone and camera. In accordance with our online training policy, during the sessions delegates are required to keep their camera switched on at all times and deactivate notifications on phones and other digital devices to avoid any distractions as full participation is required throughout each session. You must have authorised study leave to attend the course.
